Biographical or Historical Note. Fred Lewis Pattee was an author, poet, scholar, teacher, and leading authority on American literature. He was born Maon Pattee Hill, near Bristol, New Hampshire, the son of Lewis Franklin and Mary Philbrick Ingalls Pattee.

American literature in the larger sense of the term began with Irving, and, if we count The Sketch Book as the beginning, the centennial year of its birth is yet four years hence. It has been a custom, especially among the writers of text-books, to divide this century into periods, and all have agreed at one point: in the mid-thirties undoubtedly there began a new and distinct literary movement.

Fred Lewis Pattee was born in Bristol, New Hampshire, on Ma Pattee studied English at Dartmouth College and graduated in InPattee accepted a position as an Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of English at Pennsylvania State College (now the Pennsylvania State University), then earned a promotion to Full Professor in Fred Lewis Pattee, long regarded as the father of American literary study, also wrote fiction.

Originally published in by Henry Holt, The House of the Black Ring was Pattee’s second novel—a local-color romance set in the mountains of Central Pennsylvania. The book’s plot is driven by family feud, forbidden love, and a touch of the supernatural.

The American short story began in with Washington Irving. Short fiction there had been in America before The Sketch Book, some of it written by men of significance--Franklin, Freneau, Charles Brockden Brown--but from the standpoint of the modern short-story form none of it need detain us.
